Charleston Profile
South Carolina’s obesity rate for adults is one of the highest in the nation, while the number of overweight and obese children continues to climb even faster. For inner-city children, the issue is typically even more pronounced.
This is why Wellspring Community Programs proudly announces Wellspring’s first Fit Club for overweight children and teens in Charleston, South Carolina. Teaming with local non-profit and obesity treatment advocate, Louie’s Kids, along with the City of Charleston Public Schools, Wellspring’s Fit Club is the first fitness and weight loss program of its kind.
“Every day Wellspring delivers a simple, scientific, and sustainable approach to a healthy lifestyle,” commented Ryan Craig, President of Wellspring, “Wellspring Fit Club in Charleston gives us the chance to deliver our proven program to an inner-city population in desperate need of viable solutions.”
School administrators and nurses from the City of Charleston will help identify 20 children who need to learn a healthy lifestyle by losing weight and getting in shape. These children will learn how to eat, prepare, and shop for healthy food. They will also participate in activities that will help them get active and improve their fitness.
Most importantly, students will learn the importance of journaling and goal-setting from a trained Wellspring Behavioral Coach who help the participants change their behaviors so participants and their families can live a lifelong healthy lifestyle.
“For me, this is a no brainer,” says Louis Yuhasz, founder of Louie’s Kids, “South Carolina has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the nation and when you think that 90% of overweight children are likely to become overweight adults it’s even more frightening.”
