First Program in The Woodlands
Nearly 20% of Texas youth ages 10 - 17 are obese, the sixth highest rate in the country, according to Trust for America's Health's annual report on the spreading obesity epidemic.
In an effort to combat this trend locally, The Community Associations of The Woodlands recently partnered with the leader in fitness and weight loss treatment programs, Wellspring Community Programs, to provide an after school program at Bear Branch Recreation Center on 5310 Research Forest Drive.
“Children need an alternative to video games and junk food,” commented Linda K. Hughes, Recreational Superintendent for The Woodlands Department of Parks and Recreation, “we have exceptional facilities for a program like Wellspring, and we wanted to offer a fun and engaging way for kids in our area to learn a healthy lifestyle.”
Wellspring's fitness and weight loss program is a simple yet scientific program that focuses on a low fat diet, activity management, and lifestyle change for long-term weight control. Integrating these components along with stress management and coping skills, culinary training, and real-world restaurant and grocery store visits is how Wellspring's program has been proven to achieve weight loss results of over 3 lbs per week.
“The combination of great facilities and environment in The Woodlands with Wellspring's effective program will allow these local youth to achieve great fitness and weight loss results,” said Katherine Howard, Wellspring Program Director for The Woodlands, “even more inspiring are the changes we see in self-confidence and self-esteem.”
Commented Mrs. Hughes from The Woodlands, “We're already confident that this partnership with Wellspring will be great for our community youth.”
Wellspring in The Woodlands is for youth ages 11 - 18, with special groups for ages 18 and over. Meetings are after school on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 - 7:30 with occasional weekend outings. Enrollment is currently open for new students.
